Through a partnership between the Sustainable Innovation MBA (SI-MBA) program at the University of Vermont and the Levine Impact Lab (LIL), I had the opportunity to intern with LIL as a financial and business management consultant. The Levine Impact Lab is a foundation that provides funding, advising, and coaching services to grassroots nonprofit organizations focused on social and environmental issues, helping them with strategic planning and growth.
As a financial and business management consultant, I was responsible for creating financial and budget models to support the strategic planning of two grassroots nonprofit organizations (grant partners). During my internship, I experienced significant professional growth. Seeing the practical application of the theoretical knowledge I gained from my MBA program allowed me to bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional space by implementing what I had learned in real-world scenarios. This hands-on experience helped me see the relevance of my studies in a tangible way.
I also faced various challenges while creating financial models, which really honed my analytical and problem-solving skills. Each challenge pushed me to think critically and develop innovative solutions, enhancing my ability to tackle complex issues.
One of the most rewarding aspects was overcoming uncertainties and experiencing "a-ha" moments which significantly strengthened my confidence in my capabilities. Each breakthrough reassured me that I could positively contribute to the organizations I was working with, and it motivated me to continue pushing myself.
A significant aspect of my internship was the mentorship I received from Werner Rehm, a McKinsey financial consultant with decades of experience. Working with him was a great opportunity, and I learned a lot from his insights and guidance.
I also had the privilege of attending LIL’s annual retreat in Shelburne, VT, where all the staff, advisors, and grant partners gathered for a few days of learning, growth, and connection. The motivation and idea generation that emerged from these in-person gatherings were truly inspiring and reinforced the value of human connection. It provided a much-needed respite from the everyday grind for the grant partners, allowing them to step back, reflect on the bigger picture, and strategize for the future.
Overall, my internship with the Levine Impact Lab was an enriching experience that not only enhanced my professional skills but also allowed me to contribute meaningfully to organizations dedicated to making a difference in their communities. I am grateful for the knowledge I gained and the connections I made, which will undoubtedly serve me well in my future endeavors.
